Gone are the days when we would still be printing rolls of film shot on Christmas morning (Yeah) and even the early days of digital when people would bring in a memory card and ask for one of each (All 430 files). Lately I've been using my camera more to earn my keep and it makes for some irregular hours at the shop but it is great fun to be out shooting again after "living" in the shop and studio for the three months leading up to Christmas.

So this was a long way to go to get to what is happening in February. Specials in the shop include a $10 sitting fee. The session is quick, about 15 minutes, but we can go through what we can, post the images to the web, and make a great set of prints. We are also continuing and expanding our "My First Photos" program for new borns. More info to follow on that too but we photograph your child every three months for their first year. Standard sitting fees apply for the three month session and the six month session is free. Same deal for the nine month and 12 month sessions (Charged for the 9 month, not charged for the 12 month). I am also going to start offering lessons. Too many people have asked where they can take lessons. More info to follow.

Thanks for checking in. Everyone got really new cameras (except me) for Christmas and they have megapixels to burn. My first camera had 5.6 and the memory card was a honking huge 256 mb and cost $300. The good news is that you can not even find a camera with less than 10 and 2 gb cards cost $20. I found some 4gb cards at Costco last summer for $10 after a rebate and only bought 2. Duh.
But as someone involved in retail and someone who has been shooting digital for 7 years or so, I have seen some really smart people do some really dumb things. If you're in the shop and we are looking for images on your card and see the same holiday from different years, it's time to back up your files.
I have a portable hard drive on my computer to hold my files. I also burn images to a CD or DVD before I touch the files. If the event is important, like a wedding, I burn two copies so I have those files in four places (DVD (2), Hard Drive, Memory Cards). It seems excessive but I spent a lot of money one year to have images retrieved from a crashed hard drive.
As the memory cards get larger, people's computers seem to be becoming smaller. Your computer's hard drive is not an acceptable place to permanently store your photos. A CD holds 700mb of info or about three quarters of a 1gb memory card but once people go whistling past the 700mb mark they seem to give up on saving anything to a CD. DVD's are an option and if you have bought a new computer, it probably has a DVD burner. A DVD holds 4.7 gb of info so now you are into massive storage for your photos and videos.
Whichever method you choose, do it regularly. Some of the memories you have captured can not be re-done. And some of the people in the files may be gone. Back up your files!!! CD or DVD. You can always add files to either one to fill it up so you do not have to wait until you have enough photos.
This is one of my pet peeves at the shop so I am sure we'll be back to the topic.

Wedding season came early this year.
